Restore the Floor
Preserving the Foundation of St Luke’s — Past, Present & Future
St Luke’s Anglican Church is more than just a historic building, it’s a place of community, belonging, and faith.
On 7th April 1818, Governor Lachlan Macquarie laid the cornerstone of what would become Australia’s oldest surviving Anglican church building. The first regular service was held on 18th October 1819, a date we continue to celebrate as the birthday of St Luke’s.
Now, more than 205 years later, St Luke’s remains a gathering place for worship, connection, and care. From regular Sunday services to weekly community programs, the heart of St Luke’s still beats strong — but the building itself needs attention. The old floorboards and support structures, worn by generations of footsteps, must now be carefully restored.
This vital project will cost $500,000. Thanks to the generosity of NSW Heritage Grants, we’ve already secured half of the required funding. To raise the remaining amount, we’re launching the Restore the Floor campaign and reaching out to those who love this church, as well as the wider community, to help us complete this important work.
You’ve Walked These Floors — Help Us Restore Them

Whether you’ve walked these floors for years, or are simply moved to preserve an irreplaceable piece of Australian history, every donation — big or small — brings us closer to keeping St Luke’s strong for future generations.
